Wal-Mart to start selling iPhone on Sunday

Wal-Mart on Friday confirmed what people have been saying for more than a month now—it will sell Apple’s iPhone 3G at its 2,500-or-so retail outlets around the U.S.

The iPhone goes on sale at Wal-Mart on Sunday, the retailer said. An 8GB iPhone will cost $197 at Wal-Mart, while the 16GB model will sell for $297. Both prices are $2 off what Apple charges for the mobile device. Wal-Mart’s press release also noted that the company’s price-match policy lets stores match the price offered by any local competitor.

Rumors that Wal-Mart would join Best Buy as an independent iPhone reseller first surfaced in November, when word leaked out that Wal-Mart was training its employees on how to sell and support the iPhone. A week ago, a leaked memo listed both the discounted iPhone prices as well as the December 28 launch date.

Wal-Mart says it will feature iPhone 3G kiosks in its Wal-Mart Connection Center of the Home Entertainment Department at its stores.
