Apple celebrates App Store’s first birthday

The App Store was launched on July 10, 2008 (thanks to the funny time zones and early leaks of the iPhone 2.0 software) and, needless to say, it's been a wild success right from the get-go. Apple recently celebrated the one billionth download on the App Store with a generous giveaway and, according to the most recent officially announced figures, there are more than 50,000 applications on the virtual shelves of the rapidly expanding store.

In anticipation of the impending one-year anniversary of the App Store, Apple has put up a new section on the iTunes Store marking the occasion. The page lists some of the company's favorite apps from both the game and non-game sides of the stores, along with links to more extensive listings of those featured applications.

Here's hoping the App Store doesn't devolve into its terrible twos any time soon. Nobody wants to have to deal with tantrums when downloading their applications.
