TextWrangler 3.0 overhauls FTP support, improves search

If you work with text frequently and are on a tight budget, you’re probably already familiar with Bare Bones Software’s excellent free text editor, TextWrangler. Good news for you, then: the newly released TextWrangler 3.0 adds lots of great new features to make your daily text wrangling even more efficient.

Among the biggest improvements in the new version are a completely overhauled FTP/SFTP interface, which includes improved performance for FTP file transfers and new non-modal Find and Multi-File Search Windows, which contain plenty of new search options. In addition, TextWrangler 3.0 sports an improved Find Difference command, with more usable results and the ability to apply discrete differences within lines.

Always the consummate programmer’s companion, TextWrangler also now has better support for the Ruby and JavaScript languages, which should be welcomed by Web developers. There’s also additional language keyword support for Objective-C and Objective-C++ and enhanced modules for the Java and Python languages. Of course, that’s far from all that you’ll find in 3.0, so if you’re truly curious you can pore over the extensive release notes.

And, best of all, the shiny new and improved version of TextWrangler remains at the same great price of free. TextWrangler 3.0 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later and, as with the rest of Bare Bones’s product line, is compatible with Snow Leopard.
