App Store reaches two billion downloads

Apple announced Monday that the download count on the App Store has gone over the two billion mark.

“The rate of App Store downloads continues to accelerate with users downloading a staggering two billion apps in just over a year, including more than half a billion apps this quarter alone,” Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a prepared statement. “The App Store has reinvented what you can do with a mobile handheld device, and our users are clearly loving it.”

Apple announced its one billionth download on April 23, nine months after launching the App Store, and said the store had passed the 1.5-billion download mark on July 14.

In September at its event launching new iPod models, the company said that it had sold more than 50 million devices capable of running apps from the App Store—30 million iPhones and 20 million iPod touches.

According to Apple, the App Store now features more than 85,000 different apps, and the App Store reaches 77 different countries.
