Wafian HR-1 records up to 18 hours of HD video

CineForm Inc. and Wafian Corp. on Tuesday introduced the Wafian HR-1, a new direct-to-disk High Definition (HD) video recorder that can store up to 18 hours of 10-bit HD (720p or 1080i/p) video over HD-SDI. The US$14,999 system will be available in January 2006.

The HR-1 is offered in a rack-mountable form factor, designed for on-set and on-location film and video production. The video files are recorded in 10-bit YUV 4:2:2 “CineForm Intermediate” format — the HR-1 stores the video in “full raster” 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 resolution with no spatial reduction. The content can be converted into compatible formats for Avid systems and Apple’s Final Cut Pro.

The HR-1 stores video on two internal hard drives configured as a mirrored RAID 1 array; it’s operated by using a built-in touch screen LCD panel, which controls recording, monitoring and review of recorded footage. Outputs include HD-SDI and DVI ports, Gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0 and FireWire. The device measures 17 x 17 x 6 inches.

Special support is provided for JVC’s GY-HD100U camera — the HR-1 can record 1280 x 720 60p video with 4:2:2 color from the ProHD’s HD component outputs.
