Unity game engine gains compressed Web audio
Unity, the game development engine behind Ambrosia Software’s Gooball and Freeverse Software’s forthcoming Big Bang Brain Games, has been updated to version 1.6.1. A free update, Unity is priced starting at $249.
Designed for programmers and non-programmers alike, Unity enables you to create 3D games and simulations using scripts and other tools in a graphical user interface. It includes an integrated editor, character animation, ShaderLab graphics, Ageia’s PhysX physics engine and more. You can publish to Mac OS X as a standalone application, embed games in a Web page, and publish as a Dashboard widget. A professional version also enables you to publish to Windows and add additional effects.
New to the 1.6.1 release is streaming audio support — you can now stream compressed Ogg Vorbis audio for use in Web games. Also new in this release is mouse locking — you can lock mouse input and hide the cursor (helpful for making first person shooters or other content that uses “mouse delta” for input).
