iPod touch update brings image fix

On Thursday Apple released iPod touch software version 1.1.1, a hefty 150MB update that the company described only as containing "bug fixes." However, the update appears to correct a video-display problem that would leave some iPod touch units displaying dark images improperly.

Macworld compared three separate iPod touch models both before and after installing the update. Before the update, the three models varied widely in display quality, with one displaying acceptable images, one capable of only mediocre image quality, and one with extremely poor image quality including numerous instances of the "negative blacks" issue, in which certain dark image areas appear inverted.

After the update, all three models were roughly comparable in quality. The image quality of the good display didn't change very much, but the other two models showed marked improvement. (An image sample is available.)

Users of iPod touch who wish to update to the new version can do so via iTunes. When the iPod touch is plugged in, users can select it in the Source list and click Check for Update to start the download and installation process.

The iPod touch software version is 1.1.1 (3A110), in contrast to Thursday's iPhone software update, which is version 1.1.1 (3A109a).
