Newer miniStack adds storage, ports to Mac mini

by Peter Cohen, MacCentral

Newer Technology Inc. and Other World Computing on Thursday introduced the miniStack, a hard disk drive that’s designed especially for Apple’s Mac mini (though it’s compatible with any Mac or PC that includes a FireWire or USB port). Besides added storage capacity, the miniStack features a two-port FireWire and 3-port USB 2.0 hub. It measures 6.5 x 6.5 x 1.5 inches.

The device incorporates a “smart power switch” that turns the drive on when the Mac mini is turned on and a thermal probe that regulates fan speed based on hard drive temperature.

The miniStack is available without a hard disk drive for US$99.95. Prices range from $139.99 to $389.99 for miniStacks that come equipped with drives and EMC/Dantz Retrospect Backup software — capacities range from 80GB to 400GB.
