by Peter Cohen, MacCentral

Wireless service provider Verizon Wireless on Thursday announced that it’s shipping Novatel’s V740 ExpressCard, an expansion card that enables laptops including MacBook Pros to work on Verizon Wireless’ BroadbandAccess network at EV-DO Rev. A speeds. The card costs $179.99 with a two-year service agreement or $229.99 with a one-year plan.

The V740 works at an average download speed of 600 Kilobits per second (kbps) to 1.4 megabits per second (mbps) and at an average upload speed of 500 - 800 kbps. The card works in the ExpressCard/34 expansion slot located on 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros.

The new card is supported by Mac OS X v10.4.8 or later. Apple added support for the V740 and other wireless broadband access devices with its WWAN Support Update, released in February.

The card features a dual-band flip-up antenna system and dual-color LED to show you when data is transmitting.
