USB hub goes wireless via Wi-Fi

by Peter Cohen, MacCentral

Icron Technologies on Monday introduced the $395 WiRanger, a USB 2.0 hub that uses 802.11g wireless networking to go wireless, up to 100 feet away from a host computer.

The WiRanger is a four-port USB 2.0 hub that connects to a Mac or PC using a dongle that enables it to operate wirelessly up to 30 meters (100 feet) away. WiRanger is plug-and-play; it requires no special software drivers to work.

The company said the WiRanger is the first in a new line of products that will utilize Ultra Wide Band (UWBC) and 802.11a/b/g/n wireless networking standards. Icron also makes products for the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) market that may be sold under different brand names.
