Iris makes iSight a security camera

by Peter Cohen, MacCentral

MildMannered Industries on Wednesday announced the public beta release of Iris, a new Mac OS X application that utilizes the iSight webcam. It’s a free download for the duration of the public beta.

Iris lets you take snapshops, record movies, make timelapse movies and detect motion (with e-mail alerts), turning your iSight into a security device. The software lets users e-mail snapshots or movies, upload photos to the popular Flickr photo sharing service, or export movies to view on the video iPod, Apple TV or iPhone. It works with built-in iSight cameras on Intel-based Macs, but it also supports the older external iSight.

Iris requires Mac OS X v10.4 or later and an iSight camera. Other FireWire and USB webcams may work, though they’re not officially supported.
