Zvox Audio ZVOX Mini

ZVOX Audio’s ZVOX Mini doesn’t provide an iPod dock or any other iPod-specific features. However, if your primary goal in shopping for a speaker system is sound quality, the Mini’s performance will more than make up for these omissions: I haven’t heard another system, portable or stationary, that sounds as good for $200. And for $100 more you get a great-sounding system you can take with you.

Geneva Lab Model L

Judged on size alone, the $599 Model L might seem expensive; however, for just $250 more than Apple’s iPod Hi-Fi, the Model L adds a CD player, FM radio, and significantly better overall sound quality. Add to that a sleek and stylish design that will inspire conversation but won’t dominate your listening room, as well as dead-simple setup and use, and you’ve got a very appealing product. Audiophiles will want to stick with their separate-speaker systems, but if you’re in the market for an audio system that’s easy, elegant, and attractive, the Model L should be at the top of your shopping list.

Altec Lansing inMotion iM9

The Altec Lansing inMotion iM9 offers performance not found in any other portable system for under $200. And its rugged design should help it stand up to the rigors of travel. If you don’t need a wireless remote control and your audio tastes tilt toward bass and away from treble, the iM9 is an excellent speaker system for the iPod.
