At A Glance

The Intel-based Mac era begins with this 20-inch iMac, which runs on a 2.0GHz Intel Core Duo chip. This new Mac features faster RAM than its G5-based predecessor, although maximum memory has dropped to 2GB from 2.5GB in the iMac G5. A mini-DVI port in the new iMac lets you use a second external monitor, and the graphics card has undergone a slight upgrade to the ATI Radeon X1600. (You can upgrade to 256MB of graphics memory for the 20-inch iMac.) Other than that, this latest iMac isn't that much different from the late 2005 models -- right down to the built-in iSight camera and pre-installed Front Row multimedia software.

Apple boosts the processor in its 20-inch iMac to 2.16GHz. And this isn't just a mere jump in clock speed -- the old Core Duo chip has been replaced with a next-generation Core 2 Duo that boosts the amount of shared L2 cache to 4MB. Other than the larger screen size, faster processor and bigger hard drive, the specs on this model match the 17-inch iMac Core 2 Duo/2GHz. Build-to-order options include a 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo processor and a 500GB hard drive.

The most distinctive changes to the iMac line come on the outside -- the desktop now sports an aluminum enclosure that resembles what you might see from the Mac Pro or MacBook Pro. The 17-inch offerings are gone, replaced by a pair of 20-inch models and a 24-inch iMac, each with a glossy wide screen. Other changes are more modest -- the low-end iMac now runs on a 2GHz processor, instead of 1.83GHz. But all iMacs now feature a FireWire 800 port and can support up to 4GB of RAM.

Apple updated its all-in-one desktop line to include next-generation Core 2 Duo processors, which boost the amount of shared L2 cache to 6MB and the frontside bus to 1,066MHz. This entry-level iMac now runs at 2.4GHz -- otherwise, the installed memory, hard drive capacity, and optical drive specs remain unchanged from the previous model.
