At A Glance

One of two Intel-based Mac minis, this model features a 1.5GHz single-core processor. The form factor of this mini remains unchanged from its PowerPC-based predecessor, although it adds two additional USB 2.0 ports for a total of four while dropping S-video and composite ports. Internally, the new mini has a faster frontside bus and built-in wireless networking via AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth. The mini uses the Intel GMA950 as its graphics processor; since the chip doesn' have its own dedicated video memory, it shares memory with the main system RAM. The mini also gains the remote-and-software combo that makes up Front Row, allowing you to control audio, video, and photos from across the room.

Introduced in October 2005, the refurbished iMac line now comes with a built-in iSight camera plus a remote control. The latter comes in handy with a news software program that comes preinstalled on the iMac -- Front Row, a digital media application for playing back movies, DVD, QuickTime movie trailers, and video downloads from the iTunes Music Store. Photo Booth, another newly installed app, lets users take pictures with the iSight and edit them. In addition to a faster processor and frontside bus, this new iMac also ships with a Mighty Mouse multi-button mouse.

Apple moves to an all dual-core hardware lineup with the introduction of this low-end mini. No longer equipped with a 1.5GHz Intel Core Solo chip, this model now runs on a 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo -- without any change to its $599 price tag. Other specs -- the60GB hard drive, integrated Intel graphics, and 512MB of installed RAM -- remain unchanged from the previous entry-level Mac mini offering.

As Apple introduces a dual-core chip to its entry level Mac mini, the $799 mini gets a speed bump of its own to a 1.83GHz Core Duo processor. Otherwise, the specifications for this model remain unchanged from the dual-core 1.66GHz mini Apple introduced in February 2006.
