iPhone apps for visiting San Francisco and Macworld Expo
Macworld Expo 2010 is almost here, and whether you’ve been to the show or not, Expo can be an overwhelming experience, especially if you’ve never visited San Francisco. It helps to be prepared, and your iPhone can be your guide.
In this video, I’ll show you a few iPhone apps that can be helpful while you’re visiting San Francisco and attending Expo. These apps will help you get around the city, find a place to eat, and get around on the show floor.
If you have a suggestion for an app, please post it in the comments section below.
Reaction to the Apple iPad
Apple on Wednesday released its new iPad, putting an end to the tablet rumors and speculation. But now that the product has been unveiled, it’s time for the experts and analysts to chime in with their thoughts. Will the iPad be a success like the iPhone? Or will it follow the Apple TV and the Power Mac G4 Cube into the land of forgotten gadgets?
Macworld’s Jason Snell and PCWorld’s Steve Fox attended the Apple announcement and spent time with the new iPad. In this video, Fox and Snell share their thoughts—one editor was disappointed by the iPad, the other was pleasantly surprised.
After watching the video, share your thoughts in the comments section below.

The 240GB iPod
While the iPod touch and iPod nano get all the attention, the iPod classic is still chugging along as Apple's "hold everything" media player—even if it's just keeping the seat warm while we wait for a higher-capacity iPod touch.
But for those with huge media libraries, even the 160GB iPod classic, the highest-capacity iPod Apple has ever produced, doesn't provide enough space. So I turned to storage-upgrade vendor Apricorn, which offers upgrade kits for the fifth-generation (5G) iPod. Each upgrade offers a larger hard drive—120GB for the 30GB 5G iPod, or 240GB for the 60GB and 80GB 5G iPod—as well as a higher-capacity battery.
In this week's video, I walk you through the installation of Apricorn's 240GB upgrade kit to give you an idea of what the process entails.
- Format: MPEG-4/H.264
- Resolution: 480x272 (iPhone & iPod compatible)
- Size: 9MB
- Length: 5 minutes, 25 seconds

Apricorn's data sheet for the two upgrade kits is available as an online PDF.

Rip DVDs for your iPhone, iPod, and Mac
With nearly everyone in the developed world in possession of at least one iPod, people are losing patience with media that plays on only one kind of device. Chief among that media is the commercial movie DVD. In this episode of the Macworld Video I present options for converting these DVDs to a format playable on your computer, iPod, and iPhone.
- Format: MPEG-4/H.264
- Resolution: 480 x 272 (iPhone & iPod compatible)
- Size: 8MB
- Length: 5 minutes, 3 seconds

We’ve covered DVD ripping at length. A good place to start is with our DVD Ripping FAQ and Ripping Your Unprotected DVDs.
Software tools for doing the job include the free HandBrake (in cooperation with the free VLC), the Little App Factory’s $20 RipIt, and Metakine’s free FairMount. I also mention Roxio’s $100 Toast Titanium 10 and Elgato’s $150 Turbo.264HD.
Note that if you’re running Snow Leopard as well as the 64-bit version of HandBrake, that old copy of VLC you have won’t work. You need to get a 64-bit version of VLC, which you can find as part of the nightly builds.
With some luck (and foresight on the part of the right people) ripping DVDs for personal use won’t be necessary in the future. Increasingly, commercial DVDs and Blu-ray discs are shipping with a code that allows you to download a digital copy of the movie for playback on an iPod or iPhone.

SSDs and the MacBook Pro
In this week’s video, I take you on a video follow-up to my article about adding an ExpressCard solid state drive to certain MacBook Pros.
- Format: MPEG-4/H.264
- Resolution: 480 by 270 (iPhone & iPod compatible)
- Size: 8MB
- Length: 5 minutes

During the video, I discuss the Wintec Filemate 48GB ExpressCard SSD that I used for this project, and then demonstrate how to install it in the MacBook Pro. I then demonstrate the speedy startup time, and spend a bit of time discussing my Xbench disk testing results. Finally, I set up a side-by-side comparison test that shows the launch time for 10 bundled OS X applications on the internal disk and the ExpressCard SSD.
In the video, the launch of the 10 apps on the internal drive shows somewhat odd behavior—there’s a notable delay before the windows all appear, even though the icons have finished bouncing. I ran these launch tests directly after a reboot on each drive, and I tried them each three times (rebooting between each). The behavior was the same all three times, so I’m not sure what’s causing the anomaly. In the article I wrote about this ExpressCard SSD, I used a different set of 10 apps, and these didn’t exhibit the same behavior. In that test, the apps opened on the internal drive in five seconds, and on the SSD, in three seconds.
