Inexpensive ink-jet printers offer such high quality that you might consider opening your own Fotomat -- never setting foot in a photo lab again, but the cost of photo-quality printer paper could squelch those dreams. PhotoPrinter 2000 Pro helps you conserve paper by laying out multiple images for printing on a single sheet, but the program has problems that impair its usefulness.

You can create and save your own layout templates using the custom template creation screen, if one of the many presets doesn't suit you. There are other screens for cropping and framing photos, adding text, and applying image enhancements and effects, but the cryptic icons make it difficult to know what enhancement you're applying.

There's no way to save your finished layout for reprinting later; this is particularly troublesome since the absence of an Undo command means layouts can take a long time to perfect. The program also doesn't deal intelligently with high-resolution images, which can paradoxically print with unacceptable pixelation. And there's no way to access your printer's dialog box to control printing quality and speed.

Layout Outlay: PhotoPrinter 2000 Pro lets you arrange your images to print efficiently on one sheet of paper.
