Mac upgrade maker Sonnet Technologies has introduced its Encore/ST G4 1.2GHz processor upgrade. The new upgrade is aimed at certain models of "Graphite" and "Quicksilver" Power Mac G4s whose owners are looking for a processor speed boost.

Sonnet said that the new upgrade uses a Motorola 745x series G4 chip, and sports 2MB of Double Data Rate (DDR) L3 backside cache. The Encore/ST uses auto-detection technology to determine if it's in a 100MHz or 133MHz bus-equipped machine, and configures itself accordingly.

The upgrade is specifically compatible with the following AGP-based Power Mac models:

  • Power Mac G4 AGP Graphics
  • Power Mac G4 Gigabit Ethernet
  • Power Mac G4 Digital Audio
  • Power Mac G4 Cube (Requires Cube Installation Kit and professional installation.)
  • Power Mac G4 QuickSilver 2001 733, 800DP, 867
  • Power Mac G4 Servers, equivalent to desktop machines mentioned above
  • (Sonnet also noted separately that the Quicksilver 800 and 933MHz models are not supported by this upgrade.)

Sonnet claimed the new card is compatible with Mac OS 9.2 through Mac OS X and supports all software applications, with no additional software needed.

The Encore/ST G4 1.2GHz carries an estimated street price of US$799.95. Sonnet makes available the Cube Dealer Installation Kit for $29.95. Sonnet noted that it's taking orders for the new card now.
