Apple has released an update to its cornerstone multimedia technology architecture QuickTime. The new version, QuickTime 6.1, is now available for download through the Network Update pane of System Preferences.

Apple noted that QuickTime 6.1 delivers quality and performance enhancement for audio, video, and full screen playback.

Specific enhancements include more accurate rate control and improved visual quality for MPEG-4 video; the inclusion of new encoder controls and bit rate options for AAC; "significant" encode and decode performance improvements for DV; and full-screen enhancements, newly enabled keyboard shortcuts, faster entry and exit, and improved playback performance for QuickTime Pro.
