CustomFlix Labs Inc. -- a relatively new company founded to help content owners, broadcasters, and video producers monetize their assets with its on-demand video publishing service -- is showcasing a new solution for video producers at this week's Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco. The company thinks that the solution will be attractive to users of high-end video editing products such as Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, and Avid XPress DV.

The CustomFlix solution will provide video producers with a low-risk way to "easily and profitably bring new and existing content to market via DVD or VHS tapes," said John Geyer, vice president of Marketing. Until now, self publishing a title has been difficult due to high set-up fees, plus the need to correctly assess consumer demand and invest significant time and effort in the process, he added. CustomFlix removes these barriers by offering a fully integrated "content-to-cash" service.
CustomFlix Labs was started a few months back by the guys that founded Terran Interactive, the original developers of MediaCleaner Pro. CustomFlix basically allows content creators (independent filmmakers, wedding videographers, home-video enthusiasts, etc) to have a means of making their work available affordably on DVD or VHS.
With the CustomFlix service, existing content languishing on shelves, as well as new material, can be converted into revenue, according to Geyer. Producers send in the program they wish to sell (either as video tape or a DVD master), pay a set-up fee, and CustomFlix handles the rest. Their services include creation of a personalized e-store that promotes the product through descriptive text, graphics, and a 60-second streaming trailer, on-demand DVD and VHS duplication, transaction processing, packaging, and fulfillment. For projects that need to be optimized for DVD, CustomFlix also provides DVD transfers.
CustomFlix's solution also eliminates the hassles and frictional costs normally associated with traditional self-publishing methods, said CustomFlix President and CEO Dana LoPiccolo-Giles. The upfront set-up fee is US$49.95, with a $9.95 (plus 5 percent) fee per unit sold. Producers may submit their own DVDs, or, for an additional fee starting at $249, CustomFlix will convert videotape content into a DVD with custom menus and up to 18 user-defined chapters at specified time codes. CustomFlix claims to use high-end professional systems to encode variable bitrate MPEG-2 and Dolby Digital audio to deliver up to three hours of video per disc at "the highest possible quality."
