UK-based Mac game developer and publisher Virtual Programming Ltd. is now shipping Payback, a Grand Theft Auto-style action game for the Mac that puts you in the role of a master criminal on a spree.

Rendered from a bird's eye view overhead perspective, Payback is evocative of the original Grand Theft Auto, so much so that Virtual Programming Ltd proudly proclaims that every effort has been made "to make sure that Payback beats GTA in every way."
The game features advanced effects like perspective correct texture mapping, environmental mapping (reflections), bump mapping, realistic shadows, alpha-channeling with lens flares, explosions and shockwaves and 12 channel 3D sound and realistic physics.
The game is non-linear -- you don't have to follow any specific mission sequence, and you can just carjack, steal and murder to your heart's content. If you want to move up the ladder of the criminal world, however, there are freelance missions available. All you have to do is collect a certain number of points, but how you do it beyond that is your own concern.
Payback runs on Mac OS 9 or higher, including Mac OS X, and requires 64MB of RAM. It will be distributed in the United States by Freeverse Software.
