Scan the business-software landscape for the Mac, and you half expect to see tumbleweeds blowing on the horizon. It's not that the programs are lackluster; it's just that since Intuit stopped developing QuickBooks for the Mac several years ago, there hasn't been that one software package that handles the nuts and bolts of running a small business.

MYOB thinks it can change that. It's planning a fall 2000 release for MYOB AccountEdge, the successor to Accounting Plus 9.0. AccountEdge includes the same features as Accounting Plus and adds contact-management capabilities that let users call up data on customers, vendors, and personnel. But one of AccountEdge's greatest strengths may come from the company supporting it: Apple has put its heft behind the product. "The small-business market has been missing one thing," says Clent Richardson, Apple's vice president of worldwide developer relations. "We haven't had a great solution that empowers small businesses."
