iTools provides a Web-based graphical administration interface to Apache and a comprehensive suite of Internet server tools. Version 6.0, released in April, lets Webmasters configure and remotely manage Apache, DNS, FTP, along with a range of other Mac OS X Internet services, by using a standard browser on any platform. The centerpiece of iTools is the Administration Server, which extends Apache in two important ways. First, you get a graphical interface that manages the syntactically demanding Apache configuration file. And you can access this interface from any Web browser, which by definition gives you the ability to configure Apache remotely.
With Tenon's new Aqua GUI, Webmasters will also be able to manipulate Apache, DNS, and FTP directly on Apple's Aqua desktop. The new GUI will co-exist with Tenon's secure, remote browser-based administration, enabling Webmasters to seamlessly switch between desktop management and anywhere, anytime browser-based control, according to Tenon President, Anita Holmgren.
Tenon's iTools has been used for almost two years now, originally on Apple's precursor to Mac OS X, the early Mac OS X Server 1.2. The new iTools 6.0 is designed not only for Mac OS X, but also for Apple's upcoming revised Mac OS X Server.
"Using iTools 6.0 lets Macintosh Webmasters realize the full strength of an Apache-based Web server, with all the concomitant benefits of using standard Internet tools for dynamic content creation, and at the same time have all the advantages of an easy-to-use Web server," Holmgren said in a statement. "With iTools ease-of-use, top-performance and extensibility, coupled with Mac OS X's preemptive multitasking and protected memory, we expect Macintosh webmasters to rapidly transition to Mac OS X."
Because all the needed Web server capabilities will be available using Tenon's iTools 6 on Mac OS X, Webmasters will only need to consider Apple's upcoming new server product if they need the additional file sharing, NetBoot, or other advanced hardware features, she added. iTools 6 will be supported on both platforms, giving Webmasters a choice.
The new Aqua interface can be viewed on Tenon's Web site. The new GUI will be included in a future update release of iTools 6.0; a public beta will be announced shortly.
