There's a new beta of Empower Pro Phone available: version 1.1b3. Empower Pro Phone is a Mac only app that lets you have real-time voice communication with any other Empower Pro Phone user.

"The bulk of the work in this release was a major internal rewrite to convert from a Mac OS 8/9 runtime model to a Mac OS X runtime model using Carbon events and timers," Steven Johansen of Empower Pro told MacCentral. "Not much of a visual change but a dramatic performance improvement on Mac OS X."

He said that version 1.1b3 offers a simplified user interface, improved sound quality with reduced latency, enhanced error messages with recommended user action, and a phone book for keeping track of Favorites. It retains window locations and tab settings. Empower Pro Phone 1.1b3 senses UDP network availability and disables it if blocked by a Firewall

The latest beta is certified with CarbonLib 1.4, System 9.2.1 and the latest seed of Mac OS X 10.1.

The latest beta can be downloaded (a 153k file) at the product Web site. If you pre-order now, you can get it for US$14.95, which is 50 percent off of the retail price.
