Pinnacle Systems, the folks who specialize in digital video content creation tools, are no longer producing their Hollywood FX line for the Mac. The last version that supported the Mac was 4.0.

"We currently have no plans for future Mac versions of Hollywood FX," William Chen, Pinnacle's director of product management, told MacCentral.

Hollywood FX is a product for home movie making. It includes tools for 3D digital video effects, transitions, compositing and animation tools.

However, other Pinnacle products remain Mac savvy. For example, their CineWave product can provide real-time special effects when used with Final Cut Pro 2, the new version of the professional digital video editing software from Apple. CineWave is a QuickTime-based digital video product that was first introduced last October. And Commotion, a high-end effects solution for moving images, is also Mac compatible.

Hollywood FX for the Mac may simply have fallen victim to the popularity of Apple's own movie/production tools such as iMovie and iDVD. Plus, in June, Pinnacle Systems announced that it was reducing sales and profit expectations for the fourth quarter, due to the slowing economy. The company expects that sales in the quarter will be approximately 10 percent less than prior expectations, and will be in the range of $60 million to $64 million.
