The folks on the MacGIMP team are hard at work on porting version 1.3 to the Mac. Meanwhile, a packaged version of MacGIMP 1.2.2 will be available in mid-October, and will offer improvements in font support and CMYK support.

Currently, version 1.2.1 of the GIMP is available immediately at the MacGIMP Web site. It runs stable on Mac OS X up through version 10.0.4, Mat Caughron of MacGIMP told MacCentral.

MacGIMP is a Mac version of the GIMP (Graphic Image Manipulation Program). It's a freely distributed piece of software suitable for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and authoring. It's just recently come to Mac OS X.

"Although the GIMP currently lacks CMYK support, it can edit animated GIFS and is an excellent tool for manipulating RGB-based file formats such as JPG and TIFF," Caughron said. "The primary source of GIMP information is GIMP.org. This site serves as a distribution point for Macintosh releases. Mac users who have not heard of the GIMP before can learn more at MacGIMP.org."
