Restoration
Waves Ltd. has announced the release of Restoration. It's a collection of plug-ins that enable audio engineers to remove unwanted background noise and disturbing transients without affecting the original sound. The software works with both Macs and PCs.

The Restoration bundle is comprised of four plug-ins: X-Noise, X-Click, X-Crackle and X-Hum. All of the new plug-ins are based on technology licensed from German developer Algorithmix GmbH.

X-Noise learns from a section of noise, then applies a broadband noise reduction. X-Click can get rid of clicks from 78s and vinyl recordings, as well as spikes that originate from digital switching or crosstalk. X-Crackle is the second-stage filter for the restoration of audio pulled from old records -- it gets rid of crackles and surface noise left after X-Click is applied. X-Hum can be used to attenuate steady pitched low frequency disturbances, like ground loop hum and its harmonics. It's also been developed to reduce rumbles, microphone pops and even DC-offset.

Waves Ltd. CEO Gilad Keren said that Restoration's early users indicate that the signal restoring quality of the software is comparable to high-end reference hardware tools that can cost more than $10,000. "It is an ideal tool set for mastering, film, video postproduction, archiving and forensic professionals," said Keren.

System requirements call for a PowerPC 603/180MHz processor or faster (G3 or G4 strongly recommended); Mac OS 8.5 or higher; 64MB RAM (96 for multi-track); 800x600 display. The plug-ins are in RTAS, AudioSuite, VST, and MAS-compatible formats.

Look for Restoration to hit authorized Waves dealers worldwide in the second half of October 2001. The software carries a suggested retail price of US$1,200.
