Sustainable Softworks has announced the release of IPNetSentry 1.3, an update to its personal firewall and intrusion detection software for the Mac. The new version sports performance improvements and added enhancements that help users protect themselves from performance-degrading worms like Nimda, according to the developer.

IPNetSentry works in the background to prevent computers from being attacked by unwelcome visitors. The software offers flexible intruder alert notifications, and can take the user's browser straight to a Web page that will provide details about the attacker's IP address, their Internet service provider and other info that can be used to help identify and shut down the attack. IPNetSentry incorporates a preconfigured trigger set which defines common "suspicious activity," such as attempting to connect to a mail server via Telnet ports, or attempting to configure a router. The IPNetSentry Companion application enables users to control the software and create custom definitions of suspicious activity.

A new payload inspection feature blocks worms like Code Red and Nimda. This results in better reliability and more efficient performance, particularly for users running their own Web servers. The new version also increases the number of Aged filters from 250 to 2,000. That way, IPNetSentry can log and block more intruders simultaneously. IPNetSentry Companion now features an enhanced Aged Filter window that can sort by column and handle multiple deletions of log entries, too.

Some worms try to keep TCP connections open, so Sustainable Softworks has added the ability to "slam shut" intruding TCP connections. Memory leaks present in 1.2 have also been fixed. What's more, the new update to IPNetSentry features the ability to turn off all disk access functions -- a handy feature for high performance environments, like Fast Ethernet networks.

IPNetSentry is available for download from Sustainable Softworks' Web site. It carries a registration fee of US$35. The 1.3 upgrade is free to registered users.
