Id Software's Graeme Devine has noted the release of a new Mac build of the Return to Castle Wolfenstein MP (Multiplayer) Test. The new Mac build follows the Windows and Linux releases.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein

This game tests the core multiplayer capabilities of a new game currently in development at Gray Matter Studios called Return to Castle Wolfenstein. To be published by Activision and based on the core engine technology used in Quake 3 Arena, Return to Castle Wolfenstein puts players in a World War II-era storyline involving a secret Nazi stronghold populated by horrific and terrifying creatures produced by an experiment gone wrong. Id Software itself developed a primitive 3D action game based on the Wolfenstein franchise even before it gained fame with Doom or Quake. (Installments of the original 2D sprite-based game even made appearances on the venerable Apple II platform.)

The multiplayer test itself is designed specifically for Mac OS X 10.1 -- although the core underpinnings of the game will work in Mac OS 9, as evidenced by Quake 3 Arena's release, it appears that Return to Castle Wolfenstein will be for Mac OS X only.

"An OS X (10.1) build of the Wolfenstein MP Test 2 is up and available for download. I've not gone through and fixed all the niggles I want to get done, but hey it's there. There's also a separate command line dedicated server since that's been requested quite a few times," said Devine.

Devine noted that users of the previous test version -- released about the same time as Mac OS X 10.1 itself was -- must be deleted before installing and running this new build. Also, symmetrical multiprocessing (SMP) is off by default. Users of dual-processor Macs are advised not to turn it on, either. Devine also said that this build is not fully optimized, so don't be surprised if it runs slower than you would like or expect it to.

To download the multiplayer test, visit Macgamefiles.com. It's a 64.7MB installer.
