Digidesign, a division of Avid Technology, has added new 36 GB and 73 GB Ultra160/LVD DigiDrives to their storage device product line. Both drives are Mac compatible.
The company says that the drives offer 64 percent higher sustained data transfer rates than their predecessors. The drives operate at 10K RPM (10,000 Revolutions Per Minute), allowing for faster seek times. The 73|10k DigiDrive stores over 148 minutes of a full 64-track Pro Tools session recorded at 24-bit and 44.1 kHz, according to Digidesign. ProTools is Digidesign's sound editing and manipulation application.
Both drives let you play 2:1 compressed video off of a single drive (two drives were required for the previous generation), and to play completely uncompressed video from only two drives instead of the previous four.
Fitted with Digidesign/Avid's exclusive, QuietDrive technology, DigiDrive enclosures purportedly reduce drive noise by up to 20dB. Both models support increased SCSI chain length (up to 12 meters) and better data integrity than previous generations. Additionally, up to four units can be clipped and interlocked together in a stack configuration. An optional quick-release rack kit lets users rackmount two drives side-by-side in a 2U space. Self-contained construction, including built-in power and connections, enables users to take the DigiDrives to studio locations without needing a proprietary dock.
The drives have front-mounted controls and indicators. Thermal sensing circuitry controls fan speed, and a built-in heat detection/indicator circuit warns of potential problems before the drive or data are threatened, according to Digidesign.
Each DigiDrive unit includes the DigiDriveTuner application, which optimizes the drive for use with Pro Tools. The drives will be available next month.
