Quark has updated the Quark Digital Media System (QuarkDMS), its high-end digital asset management system, to version 1.6. The update adds comprehensive support for Internet and business information with the addition of an XSL processor and a Web site import tool, according to Glen Turpin, Quark's corporate communications manager. The client/server digital asset management solution lets electronic and multimedia publishers manage a "virtually unlimited" number of digital assets
"QuarkDMS 1.6 is the second major upgrade to the system since the initial product release in January 2000," he said. "The product is maturing rapidly with an ever-increasing number of optional QuarkXTensions modules that extend the capabilities of the system."
The XSLProcessor QuarkXTensions module makes the content of XML assets searchable by document attributes in addition to full text search. Users can import attributes from XML documents directly into the appropriate attribute fields in QuarkDMS. This feature makes it easy for developers to implement QuarkDMS and integrate it with other business systems, Turpin said.
The new Web Site Import QuarkXTensions module for QuarkDMS lets users import the content and structure of existing Web sites into the content management system. The QuarkXTensions module automatically makes the site available for immediate preview using QuarkDMS Media Portal, builds relations between Web site assets, and maps file attributes to appropriate QuarkDMS metadata fields. The Web Site Import software also generates thumbnails and previews of HTML assets.
QuarkDMS Media Portal, released earlier this year, provides a Web site for users to find, view and retrieve media files using popular Web browsers. Upon installation with an existing QuarkDMS system, companies immediately gain an intranet site that can be used to access files from the digital media system. Anyone within the organization can quickly and easily find valuable information, Turpin said.
The QuarkDMS 1.6 upgrade is free to all customers who are covered by maintenance contracts. QuarkDMS can be purchased from the authorized system integrators listed on the Quark Web site. System integrators who are interested in learning more about QuarkDMS should e-mail Quark. An entry-level 10-user system costs US$50,000.
