Sibelius USA Inc. has released Sibelius Instruments, a new educational tool. The software is offered as an encyclopedia of instruments, bands, orchestras and ensembles, with details on each instrument and their characteristics, how to write for them, and recordings of them in action.

The software also includes background information like the historical development of orchestras, bands and ensembles, their repertoires, and more. In addition to audio samples, Sibelius Instruments includes images, interactive quizzes, lesson plans for teachers and more.

Students armed with Sibelius Instruments can learn about instrumental writing and playing techniques like range, bowing, mutes, glissandi, harmonics, mallets and multiphonics. The guide covers more than 50 instruments and more than 20 types of band, orchestra and ensemble.

Sibelius Instruments carries a suggested retail price of US$119. The software runs on Mac OS X or Mac OS 8.6 or higher and requires 32MB RAM (128MB RAM for OS X), 170MB hard disk space and a CD-ROM drive.
