Apple has released iPod Software Update 2.0.1, which offers restore and update features to iPods with a dock connector. (Touch-wheel and scroll-wheel iPod owners without a dock connector should download iPod Software Update 1.3.)

According to Apple, iPod Software Update v2.0.1 offers better support for Asian languages; enhanced On-The-Go playlist functionality; improved playback performance; better handling of MP3 VBR songs; improved backlighting, and an enhanced alarm clock. It also fixes a problem with left/right channel swapping.

The update command downloads new software to an iPod. The update command may be disabled if the iPod doesn't need to be updated because it already has up-to-date software. The restore command returns an iPod to "factory fresh" condition by erasing and reformatting the iPod before downloading new software.

iPod Software Update v2.0.1 can be downloaded from Apple's Web site.
