Aspyr to publish Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness for Mac

Depending on your inclination, it's either good news or bad news: Aspyr Media Inc. on Wednesday officially announced plans to publish a Mac version of the game Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness. News of Aspyr's plans to publish the game leaked out last week, but this is the company's first official confirmation that it is publishing the game.

Already available for the PC and PlayStation 2, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness returns players to the world of adventuress Lara Croft. In this installment of the popular series, Lara becomes a fugitive on the run following the murder of her one-time mentor, Werner Von Croy. Lara tracks a shadowy figure called The Alchemist to clear her name and uncover the secret of the Obscura Paintings, mystical artifacts from the 14th century that contain an incredible power.

Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness introduces, for the first time, a playable character other than Lara Croft herself -- her colleague Kurt Trent can also be used in some situations. What's more, the game sports features like "Character Evolution," which causes Lara's abilities to improve as you play the game; the ability to talk with characters in the game; and a new control system featuring hand-to-hand combat, stealth attacks, "last chance grabs" and more.

Aspyr Media has long collaborated with Eidos Interactive to bring Tomb Raider games to the Macintosh. One of the company's first major publishing successes was its Mac port of Tomb Raider II, which it followed with all of the successive major Tomb Raider releases.

After long delays, Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness was released for the PlayStation 2 video game console and the PC in late June, 2003. Unfortunately, the release was critically savaged and garnered accordingly poor sales. The producers of this past summer's Angelina Jolie movie Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life even cited the game's poor showing as one reason their own movie didn't do as well as had been hoped. Still, for Lara Croft fans, news of her return to the Mac is probably a good thing.

Preliminary system requirements -- subject to possible change prior to release -- for Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness call for Mac OS X v10.2.6 or later; G4/1.2GHz or faster; 256MB RAM; 32MB RAM; 32MB Radeon 7500 or GeForce2 MX graphics acceleration or better.

Lara Croft: The Angel of Darkness is available for pre-order from Aspyr's Web site now for US$39.99. Aspyr's Web site shows the game currently at its Alpha development milestone.

As MacCentral posted this article, Aspyr's Project Status page also showed the game's release date pegged for "December 2004;" MacCentral sought clarification from Aspyr's director of PC and Mac game development Glenda Adams, who indicates that it should read "January 2004" instead.
