Reader Sally Hamilton, a senior who reminds me a bit of my mother, appears to be having problems with AppleWorks on her eMac. Her plea for help reads:

When I am in Appleworks 6 on my eMac, I try to save files with many recipes in them. When I try to organize them in a special format, I keep getting a little round rainbow circle that slows me down so much that I am thinking about going to IBM.

Can anybody there help me? I am using AppleWorks' word processing module so I do not understand why this keeps happening. Is there another program in my machine where I could put these recipes and rearrange them so that I can get more than one recipe on a page without getting that horrible little rainbow circle?

I reply:

I'm afraid that Apple hasn't taken very good care of AppleWorks. As you've noticed, it has a tendency to slow down, as evidenced by "that horrible little rainbow circle" (which I affectionately term, "the spinning beachball of death").

Apple suggests that if AppleWorks appears to be less than it could be, you delete its Recent Items folder. To do so, quit AppleWorks, open the Documents folder in your user folder, open the AppleWorks User Data folder, open the Starting Points folder, and drag the Recent Items folder to the Trash.

(You can get there a little more easily by selecting Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and typing ~/Documents/AppleWorks User Data/Starting Points and pressing Return.)

If AppleWorks continues to misbehave, you have a couple of options.

You could try cutting and pasting your recipes into TextEdit. Thanks to its support for Rich Text Formatting, it's darned close to a real word processor.

Alternatively, you might consider switching to a dedicated recipe management application such as Nik Sands' free
