Formac Electronic Inc. on Tuesday announced that it's shipping the Devideon 16x DL, a dual-layer DVD burner for Mac users that ships with the company's own proprietary DVD authoring software. Like other dual layer DVD burners, the new Devideon drive can store up to 8.5GB of data on video on a single disc. It uses FireWire to connect to the Macintosh. Formac sells the Devideon 16x DL for US$199.

The drive supports multiple formats including DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and CD-R/RW. Burning speeds are 16x write, 4x rewrite and 12x read for both DVD formats, and 4x for the second layer (DVD+R). CD-R/RW reading and burning times are 32x write, 24x rewrite and 40x read. Formac said that the new Devideon 16x DL is up to 75 percent quieter than previous Devideon models.

The software bundled with the Devideon 16x DL features chaptering and menu creation, and allows encoding of video up to 9.8 megabits per second. Users can burn DVDs and Super Video CDs.
