While I generally use this space to solve problems rather than pose them, I’d like to use its long arm to solicit your help.

A few individuals on Apple’s Discussion Forums are having a very specific problem with their iPods. That problem is that although the iPod will charge over a FireWire connection, when plugged into a computer, it won’t appear in iTunes nor can the iPod Updater utility see the iPod. USB connections appear to work fine yet restoring an iPod over such a connection doesn’t restore FireWire functionality. The problem seems to affect a variety of iPods—some original models as well as dock-connector models.

Some have suggested that the problem arose after the installation of a recent security update. Mac OS X 10.3.9 doesn’t fix it.

The long and short of it is that I’m trying to help figure this one out. If you have the problem, please relate your experience in this thread on the forums (registration required).

Thanks for your help!
