With today’s release of a major new version of the Mac OS, one of the biggest questions on users’ minds is compatibility—will their favorite software work with the new OS? (See Macworld’s regularly updated list of Tiger-compatible software for the latest on that front.) But just as important to the (many) people who aren’t rushing out to upgrade to the latest and greatest version of OS X is whether or not new software is going to be backwards-compatible with the “old” operating system.

One of the goals of Mac Gems is to help users find great tools for their Macs that they might not otherwise discover. Some of these tools will be brand-spankin’ new, whereas others may have been around for a while, just waiting to be “discovered.” In either case, readers are going to want to know if software featured in Mac Gems is compatible with their Mac, whether that Mac is running Tiger or Panther. (Sorry Jaguar users; your breed is slowing dying out.) So for the foreseeable future, I’ll be sure to note in each Mac Gems review whether a software title is compatible with both cats, or just one or the other.
