The NEC MultiSync LCD1970NX is a 19-inch, dual input (digital and analog) LCD display featuring a 1,280-by-1,024-pixel resolution, integrated USB 2.0 hub, and thin-bezel design. It is available in either silver or black for $510, or with the Soundbar 70, a set of speakers available as an option for $39. The speaker hardware clips onto the display and plugs into the back of the monitor.

The LCD1970NX has a circular base and smooth, rounded edges and an easy height, tilt, and swivel adjustability. This display does not pivot.

Out of the box, the LCD1970NX had a very slight red cast, and it was too bright, causing it to lose some highlight details and making text harder to read. I had a difficult time getting it to look better using the controls on the front of the display, but my Gretag Macbeth Eye-One calibrator did a better job. After calibration, the display was a good neutral gray and the colors were accurate. It was easier to read text after calibration too.

The display’s viewing angle is very good, showing no signs of color shifting even at extreme angles, though it did lose some brightness. People who don’t have external monitor calibration tools can use OSX’s built-in display calibration tools to correct the color-cast and brightness problems.

Macworld’s buying advice

The NEC MultiSync LCD1970UX is a good fit for users who don’t mind tinkering with monitor settings a bit in order to get a good, moderately priced, general purpose display.
