Aspyr Media Inc. announced Monday plans to release a free update for the English version of Doom 3 later this week. The new 1.3 Macintosh release will feature what Aspyr bills as a “preview” of OpenAL-based audio support that will provide 5.1 surround sound for thusly equipped Macs.
Also changed in this release is better handling of keypad keys, according to Aspyr. The update also better handles “mod” files — new maps and other changes to core gameplay developed by third parties. It’s also fixed some mod-related crashes. A crash on associated with the game’s vid_restart command has been fixed; PunkBuster anti-cheating support has been added to Doom 3’s multiplayer features; PC bug fixes have also been addressed.
Aspyr said to look for the Doom 3 update at Macgamefiles.com later this week.
