Reader Curtis Carpenter is having disc problems. Specifically:

I have started getting ‘Sense Key’ errors when trying to burn any kind of CD—whether audio, data, or MP3. This happens when I use Memorex or Fuji brand discs. I can use Maxell or Imation discs without a problem. It wasn’t until I upgraded to Tiger that I started having this problem. Is this just a coincidence?

As the old joke goes:

“Doc, it hurts when I do this!”

“Well, then stop doing it.”

And that, I’m afraid, is the answer.

It doesn’t appear to be a coincidence. In my research I’ve found that Tiger does seem to be a bit pickier about the blank discs you feed it (though I’ve had no issues with the TDK CD-R and DVD-R media that I buy at Costco). For this reason it’s a good idea to buy just a couple of pieces of a particular brand of media—particularly blank DVDs that can be a little pricey. Find a brand that your drive (and Tiger) can tolerate, and stick with it.
