Blizzard Entertainment recently reported that its massively multiplayer online role playing game World of Warcraft has garnered more than five million customers worldwide.

The news comes about one year following World of Warcraft’s original release for Mac OS X and Windows, in North America, Australia and New Zealand. Since then, Blizzard has rolled out the game to various countries throughout Europe and Asia.

As a massively multiplayer online role playing game, World of Warcraft enables players to experience the online world of Azeroth together, in the hundreds and thousands, as they participate collaboratively on quests, fight each other in head to head “player versus player” play and more. The game incurs a monthly fee in order to play.

Players can choose from a variety of races aligned with the game’s two principle factions: The Alliance and the Horde, two groups of beings vying for control of the war-torn world — and professions with which to experience the World of Warcraft — everything from a warrior or hunter to a druid, mage or warlock. Each different combination reveals specific attributes, strengths and weaknesses unique to each character class and race.

Response has been strong enough that Blizzard has announced an expansion pack called The Burning Crusade, which will open up new domains, new professions, new races, new experience for the highest-level characters and much more. Revealed initially during Blizzard’s recent BlizzCon event, more about the Burning Crusade is expected to be announced in 2006.
