MCE Technologies LLC on Tuesday announced that it has added a 160GB model to its MobileStor line of internal hard drive replacements for PowerBook, iBook and Mac mini models. The $399 drive is immediately available.
The drive is a 5400RPM model equipped with an 8MB cache. MCE claims a sustained transfer rate of up to 44MB per second with burst transfers possible of up to 100MB per second.
Although MCE did not say the new MobileStor drive was manufactured by Seagate specifically, its announcement came the same day that Seagate announced it was shipping a new 160GB laptop hard drive — the largest on the market. The new Seagate drive uses perpendicular recording technology to achieve the higher capacity, a technology used in the new MobileStor drive, according to MCE.
