As Mac users flock to applications like GarageBand and Logic to make music or Podcasts, the need for a great sounding microphone increase. M-Audio on Thursday unveiled Sputnik, a new mic based on classic vacuum tube design principles.

The Sputnik mic is designed around a military grade 6025M tube that utilizes a diminutive, dual triode design that allows for high-voltage operation. M-Audio says this means that users can easily hang this mic upside down or orient it upright without having to worry about overheating the capsule.

M-Audio said that their engineering team worked closely with L.A. recording engineers to make sure they had everything just right and then tested it against some of the more expensive models on the market.

The design of the mic isn’t for looks alone — the lollipop design minimizes diffraction from the body, resulting in superior off-axis response, according to the company. The body itself is durable solid brass with a polished nickel finish.

Sputnik is expected to ship in March and sell for $699.
