Microsoft’s Macintosh Business Unit has updated Office for Mac and the company’s Instant Messaging application Messenger for Mac.

Changes in the Office update will bring Mac users functionality that they have been requesting for some time. Entourage now includes support for Sync Services, which enables customers to sync calendar events, contacts and tasks with handheld devices and other applications that support Apple’s Sync Services.

The update also includes support for Apple’s Spotlight desktop search. Users can now use Spotlight to search Entourage emails, events, contacts, notes and tasks. Finally, enhanced Smart Card technology in Entourage will take advantage of Apple’s Keychain feature to allow users to digitally sign and encrypt mail, according to Microsoft.

Messenger for Mac 5.1 now encrypts chat and file transfers to make them more secure. In addition, if a user is logged into Live Communications Server on more than one machine, version 5.1 ensures that messages are sent to the appropriate location. The update also provides more control over saving chats at an organizational level.

The updates are available for download from Microsoft’s Web site.
