Reader Meng Thao is tired of Microsoft Office applications addressing him by the wrong name. He writes:

I just recently noticed that I made a typo on my Mac Office 2004 license registration. When I click on “About” in Word or any Office application, my name is misspelled under “This product is licensed to….” I accidentally added another letter between my first and last names.

It also shows up on the startup window when the Office apps are launched. Is it possible to change this?

Sure, and Microsoft supplies the tool for doing it.

Just launch Office’s Remove Office utility (found at /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Additional Tools/Remove Office). With Remove Office open you’ll see the Welcome to Remove Office window that bears a Continue button at the bottom-right corner of the window. Hold down the Option key and — yow, ain’t that somethin’! — the button name changes to Remove Licensing Information Only. Click that button, acknowledge that this is what you really want to do, and Remove Office will go about the job of deleting the files necessary to launch the Office Setup Assistant (where you’ll be prompted to enter your name and product key) when you next launch an Office application.
