Smith Micro Software on Wednesday announced the release of StuffIt Deluxe 12, a major new release of the popular Mac compression and archival software. StuffIt Deluxe 12 costs $79.99, and upgrades from previous releases cost $29.99.
StuffIt, long a mainstay of Mac users wanting to save precious hard disk space using its own compression format, has expanded — pardon the pun — to include support for many different file compression formats, and its developer has continuously added on with new features and capabilities.
The new version 12 adds a new compression compression engine that improves the efficiency of the StuffIt X file format when compressing MP3 audio files, high quality images formatted in PDF, TIFF, PNG, GIF and BMP formats, and more. The software can compress 24-bit images without reducing image quality and MP3 files without reducing audio quality, according to the developer.
New formats supported by StuffIt Deluxe 12 include Microsoft Office 2007 and iWork 07 — StuffIt Deluxe can now compress any image or sound clip embedded in a Pages, Numbers or Keynote document.
System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.4 or later.
