Mireth Technology on Wednesday announced the release of ShredIt X 5.8, an updated version of its “file shredder” application for Mac OS X. It’s a free update for registered users, and it costs $24.95.

ShredIt X can be used to securely erase files, folders, free disk space and more. It works on hard drives, external drives, network volumes and CD-RWs. The software can effectively perform erasing procedures that comply with government standards, and you can even configure the overwrite pattern it uses.

ShredIt X 5.8 adds support for Mac OS X v10.5 “Leopard” and also enhances the user interface.
