Sega of America announced Tuesday that its legendary side-scrolling action game Sonic the Hedgehog is now available for the Apple iPod. It can be purchased from the iTunes Store for $4.99 and works on the iPod classic, fifth-generation iPod and third-generation (video capable) iPod nano.

Sonic the Hedgehog, originally developed for Sega's 16-bit Genesis home video game console, puts you in control of the besneakered blue hedgehog as he tries to save his work from the evil Dr. Robotnik, who wants to turn animals into robots. The game was a huge hit on its first release; Sonic ultimately served as the mascot for Sega, and has been responsible for launching a franchise that totals more than 45 million games sold, to date.

PopCap Games' casual game hit Peggle is also available for download from the iTunes Store, also for $4.99. It also was developed to run on fifth-generation iPods, iPod classic and third-gen iPod nanos.

In Peggle, you must clear orange pegs from dozens of levels by rebounding your balls around the screen. The game has been a big hit on Windows since its release, and PopCap is working on a Mac version as well.
