Intuit has released a new patch that resolves problems with desktop file deletion following an update to its small business accounting software, QuickBooks Pro 2006 for Mac. The new update is available for download either by automatic update or by manual update for users who have disabled the auto update mechanism. Instructions for manually downloading the patch are online.

Intuit first identified a problem in mid-December that could cause QuickBooks for Mac to arbitrarily delete data from the desktop following the installation of an update distributed automatically to all QuickBooks users. The company said it had fixed the problem but recently indicated that it could still happen if you ran QuickBooks from a Wi-Fi location that used server redirection, such as a public hot spot.

The company now says that the R5 release fixes the problem once and for all. "Installing the patch will permanently disable the upgrade mechanism so that the issue won't occur again," said Ian Vacin, offering leader of Intuit's Mac financial software, in a posting on the company's Web site discussion board.
