FirmTek on Tuesday began shipping its SeriTek 5-Bay SATA Port Multiplier enclosure. The enclosure—which can hold up to five hot-swappable Serial ATA drives, each with a transfer rate up to three gigabits per second—can deliver an aggregate performance beyond 220 megabytes per second on a single cable.

The unit can also be configured with three additional SeriTek/5PM enclosures to equal 20 drives with RAID 0 performance of 700 megabytes per second. Given those capabilities, FirmTek appears to be targeting users who work with uncompressed video, photography, and media archiving with the enclosure.

Additional features on the SeriTek/5PM include a front-panel power switch that carries a multi-second delay to help prevent accidental power-down. The device is made of aluminum and includes two ultra-quiet fans with three user-selectable speeds, a fault LED, and a mutable temperature and fan failure alarm as well as a server-class power supply.

The unit is compatible with most eSATA controller cards as well as all 3.5-inch SATA hard drives.

FirmTek sells the SeriTek/5PM at a base price of $539.95, with multiple configurations available. The company also offers 500GB, 750GB and 1TB configurations.
